Ski touring weekend in the land of the midnight sun - Riksgränsen, Abisko and Narvik

FAQ Riksgränsen: Here you’ll find common questions and answers about ski touring in Riksgränsen

When is the best time to go ski touring in Riksgränsen?
March to early May is the best time to visit Riksgränsen. The days are long, the snowpack more stable, and the weather often clear – a perfect period for ski touring in a stunning mountain setting with both Arctic conditions and, toward the end of the season, the midnight sun.

What is ski touring and is it right for me?
Ski touring means ascending mountains using climbing skins under your skis, and then skiing down untouched terrain. It requires a decent level of fitness and experience with off-piste skiing. If you're a beginner, we recommend our ski touring course in Riksgränsen, where you’ll learn the basics in a safe environment – with easy access to both lift-served terrain and beautiful backcountry. Tour lengths vary, but daily climbs of 600–1000 vertical meters are common. If conditions and group energy allow, we may fit in multiple runs in one day.

What ski touring options are available in the area?
Riksgränsen offers a wide range of ski touring opportunities – from easily accessible day tours near the lift system to more remote adventures in the border mountains between Sweden and Norway. You’ll find both rounded peaks with gentle slopes that are ideal in poor weather, and steeper terrain for more challenging descents. On our trips – and with private guiding – we have access to our own minibus, making it easy to reach the best skiing options each day.

Do you offer heliskiing in Riksgränsen?
Yes, we offer both day trips and full-package heliskiing experiences. With a helicopter, we access remote and spectacular terrain in the border mountains between Sweden and Norway – often with amazing snow quality well into spring. Our heliskiing packages include accommodation, full board, and several helicopter drops per day, while day trips are perfect if you want to try heliskiing for just one day. All heliskiing tours are led by IFMGA-certified mountain guides and tailored to the conditions of the day. Read more and see our heliskiing offers here!

Do I need to bring my own equipment?
You can rent all necessary equipment from us on-site – touring skis, climbing skins, poles, and avalanche gear (transceiver, probe, and shovel). If you have your own ski boots with tech inserts, we recommend bringing them for better fit and comfort. A complete packing list will be provided before your trip.

Is avalanche danger an issue in Riksgränsen?
Avalanches are always a possibility in mountain terrain, and the Riksgränsen area is no exception. That’s why all our trips are led by certified IFMGA mountain guides with deep local knowledge. The guide assesses avalanche risks daily and adapts the touring plan accordingly. The area offers both steep terrain and gentler mountains, allowing for flexibility based on current conditions.

Do I need to book a guide?
No, it’s not mandatory – but highly recommended unless you are very experienced and familiar with the area. Our guides enhance both safety and the overall experience through their local insight and extensive backcountry knowledge.

How do I get to Riksgränsen?
The easiest way to reach Riksgränsen is by flying to Kiruna, followed by a 1.5-hour car or train journey. You can also fly to Evenes (Harstad/Narvik Airport) or take the overnight train directly to Riksgränsen. Many of our travel packages include transfers from Kiruna or Evenes.
